Hårslev Efterskole

Hårslev Efterskole is a boarding school with 90 students. We take students in year 9 and 10 and offer school-leaving examinations. We offer a high academic level as well as a range of practical, physical and artistic subjects.

Hårslev Efterskole is a boarding school with 90 students, 11 teachers and 6 technical staff including 3 kitchen staff. We offer year 9 and 10 and we prepare our students for and execute the normal Danish school-leaving examinations.

This means lessons in Danish, English, Maths, Science, Social Studies, Geography, Biology, French and German. On top of this we offer a range of artistic, physical and practical subjects.

All students choose one of 6 directions for 6 months at a time. These are music, outdoor living, arts, media, sports and drama. These directions take up the afternoons twice a week and let the students delve deeper into and develop new skills in their chosen field.

A normal school day starts with breakfast at 7 am. School runs from 8 am to 16.30 pm with several short breaks with snacks and a long lunch break. Each evening the teachers offer homework help and an optional activity (sports, arts, games, movie night etc.). It is our goal that all students feel comfortable and become a valuable part of our little community. In order to ensure this, the teachers organize and monitor a large number of practical and fun activities. There are at all times adults present.

The students live in rooms of two-three people, some with their own bathroom and others with shared facilities down the hall. Boys and girls are allowed in each other’s areas between 8 am and 10 pm and otherwise not. All meals are prepared and served by our professional kitchen staff and we always eat in the common dining hall. The food is healthy and nutritious and we cater for any special needs. The students take turns in helping cleaning after each meal.

In addition to classrooms, dining hall and student’s living quarters the school boasts a computer room, common room for students, sports hall, music room with studio, drama room with stage and props, fully equipped art rooms, outdoor shelters, football fields, camp fire site, climbing wall, outdoor basketball court and many other “hang outs” for the students.

The school is situated in a small village way out “in the sticks”. This means quiet surroundings and lots of fresh air. All our students bring their own bikes.

Our Danish slogan is “Faglighed, Fællesskab og Fantasi”. This translates roughly as ”Academic focus, Fellowship and Fantasy”.

Academic focus because we believe a good education is key to a good life. We are a school and as we strive to give our students the best we also expect our students to commit themselves.

Fellowship because the feeling of belonging and being a part of something meaningful is what creates self esteem and independence and is a base for personal courage and development.

Fantasy because it is important to have fun, be creative and follow your dreams.

Every student is a unique individual to us, and we take a democratic approach in all situations. Our main tool is dialogue and understanding and our hope is to help students develop into caring, confident and independent world citizens.
